🏛️ Calakmul: the Mayan city engulfed by the forest
📍 Location
- Located in the state of Campeche, in the heart of the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve, one of the largest protected areas in Mexico.
- At about 35 km from the Guatemalan border, in the middle of the tropical jungle of the Petén basin.
- Access is deliberately difficult: several hours of driving from Campeche or Bacalar, which makes it a site little frequented and preserved.
🧭 History and significance
- Calakmul was one of the most powerful Mayan cities from the classical period (250–900 AD).
- She was the center of the Kingdom of the Serpent (Kaan), direct rival of Tikal in Guatemala.
- At its peak, the city had nearly 50,000 inhabitants and controlled a vast territory extending over more than 150 km.
- The name Calakmul means “two adjacent mounds” in the Mayan language, in reference to the two large pyramids on the site.
🏯 Architecture and structures
- The site has more than 6,750 structures identified, distributed over a central area of 2 km² and a residential area of 20 km².
- The Structure II, high of 45 meters, is one of the largest pyramids of the entire Mayan civilizationIt contains several royal tombs and was enlarged by the superposition of successive temples.

- The acropolis, ceremonial places and temples.
- The engraved steles, of which Calakmul holds the largest known number in the Mayan world.
- The observatories, the water tanks, and the noble and popular dwellings.
🌿 Biosphere Reserve
- Calakmul is nestled in a dense tropical forest, classified Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO.
- It houses a exceptional fauna : jaguars, howler monkeys, toucans, tapirs, and more 230 species of birds.
- The environment is silent, wild and alive, with jungle sounds accompanying every step.

- The atmosphere is introspective and mystical : we walk alone or almost, among giant trees and thousand-year-old ruins.
- Unlike Chichén Itzá or Tulum, Calakmul offers a total immersion, without crowds or artificial noise.
- It is recommended to come early in the morning, with a local guide or independently, to fully enjoy the light and calm.
