🏛️ Chichén Itzá: the sacred city of the Itzáes
📍 Location
- Located in the state of Yucatan, between Mérida and Valladolid, in the heart of the peninsula.
- The site extends over more than 300 hectares, surrounded by jungle and natural cenotes.
🧬 Origins and meaning
- Founded around the 5th century AD by the Itzá, Chichén Itzá means in the Mayan language “at the mouth of the well of the Itza”, in reference to the cenotes which supplied the city with water.
- It reached its peak between the 8th and 13th centuries, becoming a major religious, political and economic center of the Mayan world.
- From the 10th century, the city was influenced by the Toltecs, coming from central Mexico, giving birth to a hybrid architectural style.
🏯 Iconic monuments
🐍 El Castillo (Temple of Kukulcán)
- Step pyramid of 30 meters high, dedicated to the Kukulcán feathered serpent, major deity of the Mesoamerican pantheon.
- During the equinoxes, a play of light and shadow creates the illusion of a undulating snake along the steps — a masterpiece of astronomy and engineering.
🏹 The Temple of Warriors
- Imposing structure lined with carved columns, representing warriors and deities.
- It evokes the Toltec influences and the military rituals of the city.
⚽ The Great Ball Court
- The largest in Mesoamerica : 168 meters long.
- This ritual game mixed sport, cosmology and sacrifice, with beliefs related to the sun cycle and fertility.
💧 The Sacred Cenote
- Natural well of 60 meters in diameter, used for the ritual offerings and the human sacrifices.
- Valuable objects and human remains were found there during excavations.
🔭 The Observatory (El Caracol)
- Circular building used for observation of the stars, notably Venus, very important in the Mayan calendar.
🎭 Culture and spirituality
- Chichén Itzá was ruled by a elite of priest-astronomers, capable of predicting celestial cycles and legitimizing their power.
- The site reflects a complex cosmology, where each building is oriented according to astronomical and symbolic principles.
🏆 Worldwide recognition
- Classified in UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988.
- Elected in 2007 as one of the seven new wonders of the world, for his outstanding universal value.
