The Yucatan

Welcome to Yucatan

🗺️ Geography and natural setting

  • The Yucatan Peninsula stretches between the Gulf of Mexico to the west and the Caribbean Sea to the east.
  • It mainly brings together the three Mexican states of Yucatan, Campeche and Quintana Roo.
  • Its relief is flat and limestone, without mountains, but dotted with small hills, of mangroves, and of tropical forests.
  • Water mainly circulates underground, giving birth to the famous cenotes : natural wells of fresh water, often crystal clear, once used for sacred Mayan rituals.

🌿 Climate and biodiversity

  • Climate tropical, hot and humid, with a rainy season of June to October.
  • The north is drier, while the south is covered with dense jungle.
