et_block_module\"><div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\"><p><!--StartFragment --><\/p>\n<p>\ud83c\udfdb\ufe0f <strong>Calakmul: the Mayan city engulfed by the forest<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\ud83d\udccd <strong>Location<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Located in the state of <strong>Campeche<\/strong>, in the heart of the <strong>Calakmul Biosphere Reserve<\/strong>, one of the largest protected areas in Mexico.<\/li>\n<li>At about <strong>35 km from the Guatemalan border<\/strong>, in the middle of the tropical jungle of the Pet\u00e9n basin.<\/li>\n<li>Access is deliberately difficult: several hours of driving from Campeche or Bacalar, which makes it a site <strong>little frequented and preserved<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\ud83e\udded <strong>History and significance<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Calakmul was one of the <strong>most powerful Mayan cities<\/strong> from the classical period (250\u2013900 AD).<\/li>\n<li>She was the center of the <strong>Kingdom of the Serpent (Kaan)<\/strong>, direct rival of <strong>Tikal<\/strong> in Guatemala.<\/li>\n<li>At its peak, the city had nearly <strong>50,000 inhabitants<\/strong> and controlled a vast territory extending over more than <strong>150 km<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The name <em>Calakmul<\/em> means \u201c<strong>two adjacent mounds<\/strong>\u201d in the Mayan language, in reference to the two large pyramids on the site.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\ud83c\udfef <strong>Architecture and structures<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The site has more than <strong>6,750 structures identified<\/strong>, distributed over a central area of <strong>2 km\u00b2<\/strong> and a residential area of <strong>20 km\u00b2<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>Structure II<\/strong>, high of <strong>45 meters<\/strong>, is one of the <strong>largest pyramids of the entire Mayan civilization<\/strong>It contains several royal tombs and was enlarged by the superposition of successive temples.<\/li>\n<li>There are also :<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>acropolis<\/strong>, ceremonial places and temples.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>engraved steles<\/strong>, of which Calakmul holds the <strong>largest known number in the Mayan world<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>observatories<\/strong>, the <strong>water tanks<\/strong>, and the <strong>noble and popular dwellings<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\ud83c\udf3f <strong>Biosphere Reserve<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Calakmul is nestled in a <strong>dense tropical forest<\/strong>, classified <strong>Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>It houses a <strong>exceptional fauna<\/strong> : jaguars, howler monkeys, toucans, tapirs, and more <strong>230 species of birds<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The environment is <strong>silent, wild and alive<\/strong>, with jungle sounds accompanying every step.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\ud83e\uddd8\u200d\u2642\ufe0f <strong>Visit experience<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The atmosphere is <strong>introspective and mystical<\/strong> : we walk alone or almost, among giant trees and thousand-year-old ruins.<\/li>\n<li>Unlike Chich\u00e9n Itz\u00e1 or Tulum, Calakmul offers a <strong>total immersion<\/strong>, without crowds or artificial noise.<\/li>\n<li>It is recommended to come <strong>early in the morning<\/strong>, with a local guide or independently, to fully enjoy the light and calm.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u2728 <strong>Why Calakmul is unforgettable<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It is a place where <strong>history sleeps
