  • Myra is located near the modern town of Demre<\/strong>, in the province ofAntalya<\/strong>, in the southwest of Turkey.<\/li>\n
  • Nestled between the sea and the mountains, it was one of the six great cities of the Lycian confederation<\/strong>, with a major political and religious role.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    \ud83e\uddec Origins and history<\/strong><\/p>\n

    • Founded around the 5th century BC<\/strong>, Myra was successively Lycian, Greek, Roman and Byzantine<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
    • It prospered thanks to its strategic position on the trade routes<\/strong> between Europe and Asia Minor.<\/li>\n
    • Its ancient port, Andriake<\/strong>, located a few kilometers away, ensured maritime trade and strengthened its influence.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      \ud83e\udea8 Lycian rock tombs<\/strong><\/p>\n

      • One of the most spectacular elements of the site: the necropolises dug into the cliffs<\/strong>, overlooking the valley.<\/li>\n
      • These tombs imitate multi-story houses<\/strong>, with sculpted facades<\/strong>, the symbolic doors<\/strong>, and sometimes funerary reliefs<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
      • They bear witness to the Lycian beliefs around death<\/strong>, where the deceased were believed to reach the afterlife by rising to the heavens.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        \ud83c\udfad The ancient theater<\/strong><\/p>\n

        • Built into the hillside, this Roman theater<\/strong> could accommodate up to 11,000 spectators<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
        • It is remarkably well preserved: stands, stage, access corridors, and decorative elements are still visible.<\/li>\n
        • It served the performances, ceremonies and civic gatherings<\/strong>, in a city where culture occupied a central place.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          \u26ea Saint Nicholas Church<\/strong><\/p>\n

          • Near the site, in Demre, is theByzantine church dedicated to Saint Nicholas<\/strong>, bishop of Myra in the 4th century.<\/li>\n
          • This historical figure is at the origin of the legend of the Santa Claus<\/strong>, and his tomb still attracts many pilgrims.<\/li>\n
          • The church houses ancient frescoes<\/strong>, the carved columns<\/strong>, and an atmosphere imbued with spirituality.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
