  • Located near the town of Serik<\/strong>, in the province ofAntalya<\/strong>, in the south of Turkey.<\/li>\n
  • The theatre is located at the foot of a hill, in a fertile plain crossed by the river K\u00f6pr\u00fc\u00e7ay<\/strong> (formerly Eurymedon), which connected the city to the ancient port.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    \ud83e\uddec Origins and construction<\/strong><\/p>\n

    • Built between 155 and 180 AD<\/strong>, under the reign of Marcus Aurelius<\/strong>, by the architect Zeno<\/strong>, son of Theodore of Aspendos.<\/li>\n
    • It was dedicated to the city \u200b\u200bgods<\/strong> and to the Roman imperial family<\/strong>, a symbol of prosperity and loyalty to Rome.<\/li>\n
    • Its exceptional conservation is due to its reuse as a caravanserai<\/strong> by the Seljuks in the Middle Ages.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      \ud83c\udfdf\ufe0f Architectural features<\/strong><\/p>\n

      • Capacity: approximately 15,000 spectators<\/strong>, spread over a hemicycle of stone steps<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
      • Monumental stage facade<\/strong> : two floors of niches, Corinthian columns and bas-reliefs<\/strong>, beautifully carved.<\/li>\n
      • Circular Orchestra<\/strong> 24 meters in diameter, with acoustics so perfect that a whisper in the center<\/strong> is audible up to the upper tiers.<\/li>\n
      • The rear wall is topped with perforated consoles<\/strong> who supported the velum<\/strong>, stretched canvas to protect spectators from the sun.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        • The theater hosted plays<\/strong>, the concerts<\/strong>, the public games<\/strong>, and the civic ceremonies<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
        • Today it is still used for opera and ballet festivals<\/strong>, including the famous Aspendos International Opera and Ballet Festival<\/strong>, which brings places back to life under the stars.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
