🧑‍🎨 Origin and founder

  • Founded in 1982 by Suteja Neka, a Balinese teacher and collector with a passion for art.
  • Inspired by foreign artists like Rudolf Bonnet and Arie Smit, which have deeply influenced modern Balinese art.

🏛️ Architecture and organization

  • The museum is designed as a set of traditional Balinese pavilions, each dedicated to a style or an artist.
  • The architecture mixes stone sculptures, alang-alang roofs, and Hindu motifs, blending perfectly into the surrounding landscape.

🎨 The collections

The Neka Museum offers a chronological and stylistic exploration of Balinese art:

  • Balinese Painting Hall : classical works depicting Balinese daily life, myths and ceremonies since the 17th century.
  • Arie Smit Pavilion : dedicated to the Dutch painter who captured the vibrant colors of Bali.
  • Gallery I Gusti Nyoman Lempad : ink drawings and sculptures by one of the greatest Balinese artists.
  • Robert Koke Photographic Center : black and white photos from the 1930s, immortalizing Balinese dances, temples and faces.
  • East-West Art Annex : works by international artists influenced by Bali.
  • Indonesian Contemporary Art Hall : Indonesian modern and contemporary art.

  • The museum is surrounded by lush gardens, of lotus ponds, and of shaded paths.
  • The atmosphere is calm, meditative, ideal for a slow immersion in the Balinese artistic universe.
  • The guided tours are sometimes offered to better understand influences and techniques.

  • Schedules : open every day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (closed on Tuesdays).
  • Duration of visit : approximately 1.5 to 2 hours to fully enjoy the collections.
  • Access : easily accessible from the center of Ubud, by car or on foot.
