Ha Long Bay

Welcome to Ha Long Bay
🏞️ Ha Long Bay: the sleeping dragon in the emerald waters
📍 Location
- Located in the Gulf of Tonkin, in the northeast of Vietnam, about 170 km from Hanoï, Ha Long Bay stretches over more than 1,500 km².
- She is part of the Quảng Ninh province and is bordered by the towns of Ha Long, Cam Pha, and the island of Cat Ba.
🧬 Geological origins and legend
- The bay is famous for its 1,969 limestone islands and islets, with strange and spectacular shapes, emerging from the turquoise waters.
- These karst formations developed on more than 300 million years old, sculpted by erosion and tectonic movements.
- According to Vietnamese legend, a celestial dragon would have descended into the sea to protect the country from invaders. By spitting jewels and pearls, he would have created the islands to form a natural barrier. Hence the name Hạ Long, which means “descent of the dragon”.

- The bay offers a dreamlike landscape, with :
- The steep rocks covered with vegetation,
- The spectacular caves as Hang Sửng Sốt (Surprise Cave) or Hang Thiên Cung (cave of the Heavenly Palace),
- The hidden beaches, the quiet lagoons, and the floating villages as Cửa Vạn.
