📍 Location

  • Located in the modern city of Didim, in the province ofAydın, on the Aegean coast of Turkey.
  • This temple was an integral part of the ancient city of Didyma, linked to Milet, a large Ionian metropolis located 17 km to the north.

🧬 Origins and history

  • The sanctuary of Didyma was famous from the 7th century BC for his oracle of Apollo, rivaling that of Delphi.
  • According to legend, Apollo entrusted the gift of prophecy to a shepherd named Branchos, whose descendants, the Branchides, became the priests of the temple.
  • The temple was destroyed by the Persians in 494 BC, then rebuilt from the 4th century BC in a monumental style, but never fully completed.

  • The temple measures 118 meters long on 60 meters wide, making it one of the largest temples of Antiquity.
