Termessos

Welcome to the archaeological site of Termessos
🏛️ Termessos: the city suspended between sky and stone
📍 Location
- Termessos is located in the Güllük Dağı National Park, at about 34 km northwest of Antalya, in the Taurus Mountains.
- Perched at more than 1,000 meters above sea level, it offers spectacular views on the surrounding valleys and an atmosphere wild and silent.
🧬 Origins and history
- Founded by the Solymes, a people mentioned by Homer, Termessos is famous for having resisted Alexander the Great in 333 BC, thanks to its impregnable position.
- It flourished under the Romans, while maintaining a political autonomy outstanding.
- Abandoned after a earthquake in the 6th century, it was gradually engulfed by vegetation, which explains its exceptional state of conservation.
🏯 Major remains
- Ancient theater : leaning against the mountain, it offers a dizzying view on the summits. The stands, the stage and the access corridors are still clearly visible.
- Agora : large square lined with porticoes, center of civic and commercial life.
- Temples : dedicated to Zeus Solymeus and other local deities, with columns and inscriptions still legible.
- Necropolises : rock tombs, monumental sarcophagi and mausoleums scattered throughout the forest.
- Fortified gates, cistern, Roman baths, and dwellings testify to a well-organized and prosperous city.
🌿 Nature and atmosphere
- The site is surrounded by pine forests, of limestone rocks, and a discreet fauna : eagles, butterflies, wild boars.
- Access is via a steep path, which adds to the experience a hiking and discovery dimension.
- The silence, the light filtered through the trees, and the ruins overgrown with vegetation create a mystical and contemplative atmosphere.
